Dear Parents/Guardians,

There is so much to tell you - please read on!

McDonald's McTeacher's Night!

On Thursday, November 15th, the White Center McDonald's will honor Arbor Heights Elementary School with a "McTeacher's Night."  Come to the White Center McDonalds from 5:00 until 7:30 that evening for dinner.  A percentage of the money made during that time period will be donated to our school. Fast food may not be your idea of the ideal dinner, but make an exception. Come out and support our school.  The real treat is that Arbor Heights staff members (including the principal) will be behind the counter at your service!

Kids For Cans

As the holidays approach, we must all think more about people who face a daily struggle for survival.  We can all pitch in and bring them holiday cheer by participating in an all-school service learning effort for Northwest Harvest's sixth annual "Kids for Cans" food drive.

We will start collecting cans from Friday, October 26th until Friday, November 16th.  There will be boxes in the Honor Lounge for collection of cans.  Let's make this fall service-learning project a success.  One of more cans of food from each child will make a huge difference in the lives of many.

Congratulations Salina!

VSA Arts of Washington has selected the work of Arbor Heights fifth grader Salina to represent the state in an international exhibit entitled "Children Beyond Borders."  Salina's "box sculpture" will be part of a culminating exhibit from January 18 until March 17 during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Students from all nations will have their work displayed.  Each student artist's project expresses personal ideas, dreams and visions by reconfiguring identical boxes into an original work of art.

The concept of "Children Beyond Borders" was inspired by the international art exhibit "Women Beyond Borders."  Both exhibits will be side by side at the 2001 Winter Olympic Games. Congratulations Salina!    Way to go!!

Sincerely,

Carol A. Coram, Ed.D

Principal

Picture Retakes

Picture retakes are scheduled for Tuesday, November 6, 2001.  If your child missed Picture Day in October please pick up an order form from the office.

Book Character Day

Book Character Day is next Wednesday, October 31st.  For the last part of the day children will transform, stepping out of the pages of their favorite book to become a book character.  We may have characters from books like Beauty and the Beast, The Old Witch, Little House on the Prairie, Miss Nelson is Missing, just to name a few.  Our goal is to use some for the natural enthusiasm generated at this time of year and direct it to reading and have a good time too!  Classrooms will be having parties in the afternoon - you may have heard from your Room Parent by now to see if you can help.
